An All-In-One Guide to Ninja Salvaging
So a lot of the time I spend online, I see newer players coming into the SN public chat looking for advice on how to start up with doing ninja salvage.
MLYT has hosted many guides, on how to scan, find a system, and more. These guides are great, but they get outdated, and they're all separate.
I set out with this in mind to produce a sort of all inclusive guide to ninja salvaging, showing beginners to the trade exactly what they'll need to get themselves started, as well as demonstrate how easy and quickly you can get into it.
In the video embedded below, I discuss what ship to scan and loot with, how to fit them, how to scan, and how to go about ninja salvaging someone's wrecks. The main purpose for this guide is to be a complete tool to link to people who ask questions, so I can give them good visual advice, rather than have to repeat the same few hours over for each person one on one.
Feedback is always good, but if you comment to say something like "X fit is better cause I do this with it", then the door is over there ->
This video is intended to give the newest of players the absolute cheapest and easiest way to get started in the trade, and as such makes use of very cheap modules and ships. Yes, you will upgrade, but this is meant as a starting point.

Great vid for the uninitiated, I did pick up a couple of minor errors however.
1. CCP recently unlocked the other scan probes beyond 4 I believe and so more probes does = better scans.
2. Nano fiber internal structures do actually increase speed as well as agility.
And a couple tips.
1. I find using 1 center cheater probe and 1 probe in each direction of the arrows overlapping the center probe actually cuts down my scan time as i don't have near as many rings where you mentioned you could have to move up or down. also I often find L4 missioners far above or below the planetary plane and have less competition with other ninja salvagers.
2. Training only for minmatar frig 4 will alow you to pilot both a probe and a vigil well and can reduce your training time by about a day if you don't have any frig skills trained yet. Minmatar is also arguably one of the pest pvp races and this will allow you to continue to train towards a hurricane for when the missioner shoots you.
I put three annotations in for the errors you found and the scanning plane tip. Thanks for your feedback. ;)
No idea what I thought I was saying about nanos.. course they increase your speed. Though I didn't know at all about the probe change. So thanks again.

Great post, I'll link it from the Srs Bzns Podcast site to help out new ninjas :)
I can't remember if you mentioned it, but it's worth noting that you can't tractor other people's wrecks. Also, the new probe formation resize mechanic is really nice (Alt-resize from memory) - saves moving each probe individually when going from say 8AU to 4AU.
Incidentally, what would you use to take down a PVE marauder if he shot at you?
Looking forward to the flipping and fighting episodes. Yarr.
Im not sure what your skills are, but I used this:

Literally anything with some neuts on it. Two meds should do. My Golem and my Kronos are BARELY cap stable faction fitted. So one or two neuts and they'll go down fast.
this blog has a multiple personality disorder, i love it

vive la différence!
NS is not dead. Rather, getting shot at is dead. You work too hard for one single kill nowadays. But salvaging itself is not dead. Especially for a new ninja, whose sole interest for the first while is likely ISK alone.
Even the ISK is bad these days. L4 mission loot nerf killed much of the valuable drops, and anyone who brings a Noctis friend/alt just owns the whole field. I wouldn't recommend NS to anyone these days.
Speaking as a new ninja myself, I feel I have to disagree with you. I found out about ninja salvaging after the shine of mission running wore off. Which was, oh, about two weeks into my first trial account. I read up a lot, got a scan ship, a salvage ship, and made my first 100 million in one week.
Does that compare favorably to running L4 missions yourself? Probably not. But I honestly couldn't be bothered to go through the endless grind of low-level missions just to end up in an endless grind of high-level ones. The same goes for most other professions available in EVE. Months and months of skill-learning and/or grinding before the ISK begins to roll in. Bleh.
At that very early stage of my toon's life, ninja salvaging BY FAR outstripped any other profession in terms of making ISK for me. Plus it's FUN to plunder someone else's mission, which - to my mind - most other professions are emphatically not.
These days, no night spent online goes by where I don't get shot at. If the ninja fleet is out with logis, that translates into a very high ratio of kills. If the fleet is not out, I do the old ship-swap (now with 30 seconds less time spent chewing my fingernails in station) and still get a kill about 30% of the time.
I honestly don't know where the idea comes from that ninja salvaging would not be the best money-maker for a (very) young toon, or that it's so unbelivably hard to get MRs to shoot. I'm sure the halcyon days were even better, but as it stands today, I would recommend NS to anyone.
Getting shot at is dead? Huh? We've had plenty of Saturdays and Sundays in SN with 15-20 kills the last 4 months. Not sure where you get this impression.
