Black Prophecy Tears: Ironfrost and his E-Honor
Black Prophecy continues to give me lots of enjoyment. I'd discovered that the character search would not only tell you who was online - on the opposing team - but where they happened to be at that very moment. This made it easy to follow the same player all over the game and shoot him over and over.
Then he brought his slightly higher level friend, and I shot that guy over and over. Since he couldn't kill me before I killed him, I let him get in a few shots. When he eventually left the sector, I opened a conversation with him. What resulted was classic "games are like real life!" e-honor hilarity.
Black Prophecy lacks any ability to save chats, which is extremely annoying, so I had to screen shot everything.
I must say I agree with that pilot.. what you did was pure griefeing/childish behaviour with sole purpose to wreck someones enjoyment. Now I wouldn't say anything if this had any material benefits but killing noobs over and over again is just plain idiotic. If you enjoy this, you should switch to a different game genre, perhaps make 12 year olds ragequit on COD or be an ass on a certain Minecraft server?

This is exactly why I think it's more fun to watch the EVE mentality at work from the outside. While I agree that tears are sweet, over-doing it and falling into childishness just makes you look like a fat elementary school bully who eventually gets his ass handed to him.

Hm. I recently proved EVE is exactly like real life. I guess Black Prophecy not so much. This also explains why I haven't seen so many Socratic killmails floating around lately -- he's busy playing Black Prophecy. How'd you manage to find him? ;-)
I find it strangely ironic that this guy tried to jump you and make it a 2 on 1 fight, sounds like, but later cries about honor...
"If the devs didn't want me to..." - unless you have that in writing from the very devs, it's a bullshit line used by people who can't stand behind their own actions. Especially since we all know that it's ultimately impossible for a developer to prevent any and all undesired player behavior by code (short of not having a multi-user game at all).
So, if you want to grief - fine; but don't pretend that you're just the helpless executor of some nebulous dev's will.

We infiltrate corporations and steal from them; we make agreements and then betray them; we do anything the game allows us to do without violating EULA. We shoot our friendlies and get people frothing mad over a game.

It was a good story until you posted chat logs. Then you just come off as a douchebag, intentionally misrepresenting what he says so you can build a strawman to beat on. Black Prophecy is a game - last time I played it, anyway - and the way these hopeless, acne-ridden oiks think they can possibly convince seasoned gamers to compare real life to pixels and bytes just because they once saw Tron, cracks me up no end. GO OUTSIDE and get some natural light on your pasty skin, whingers.
I love hearing how these sad, hopeless plebians get angry and frustrated when they *deliberately* place themselves in these situations and come a cropper! It's a dangerous world inside your computer, but you could always get killed crossing the street in RL!

I'd call that stalking, and while like RL, its illegal in RL. Eve doesn't let you track a user so well and so the game developers will have to adjust BP to fix this issue of stalkers, sadly really.

Once upon a time somebody did something creepy to you, it hurt and now your taking it out on the world. Thats what conseling and or jails are for :)

eeeh, you're doing it now - comparing the game ro RL - I'd call the incident detailed in this post pretty bloody funny, the only reason I use this site is cos these stories make me laugh. Very loud. You will not end up in jail for shooting someone repeatedly in-game. However, if you have a complaint, talk to the devs/GM and raise a dispute. Seriously, I would NOT recommend going to the police. You might get laughed at yourself. You are missing the point of this site, and very much like Eve and BP, if you don't like it, you can always switch off, or go elsewhere - like a bear-forum or WOW. You will never convince me and probably the majority of people RL and game should be treated the same.

I am not a big fan of Tears or this blog, but I read this post because I wanted to know more about Black Prophecy and how it compares to EvE. Judging by the tone of this blog and the comments, any game that allows asshats to grieve anyone without any way to stop it is not ok in my book. Going to pass on it until peeps like Khalia get bored of it and move on to something different. Let me know when that happens. Thanks.

The way these games go, you can grief and it's allowed. People who intentionally screw other people over for fun, are mentally deficient. Yes, popping someone randomly is fun. I've done it once or twice. But REPEATEDLY doing it? Sad. If you want to impress me, and pretty much everyone else, take a small ship, underpowered, like the ones the newbs have, and go fight a more experienced/powerful player and WIN. Or lose. Doesn't matter. That would show 1. brains 2. balls. and 3. you're not totally worthless as a human being. Yes this is a game, and it is fun. BUT that being said, people act in games how they are in real life, but are afraid to show. ie, the writer of this blog is a secret sadist who loves screwing over innocent people because he/she is unable or unwilling to try something hard. The 'tears taste good', is also a sign of someone who is unhappy with their life, and is trying to bring everyone down to their level. The one thing that would make griefing fun (in my book) is a button, or a game mechanic, that when you grief someone, it moves you to a seperate server with the other griefers and let you grief each other. Eventually, that's all you'll have around you, and the sound of YOUR tears and theirs crying over each other would be delicious :)

I'm sorry. Just saying that people who do this in game, does reflect on their personalities. I cannot conceive of screwing someone over (in RL or otherwise) for pleasure. The fact that you CAN, says things. I know someone who does grief in-game. They can't be trusted in RL either. You know the type, typical talk-behind the-back, start drama between couples so she can sleep with their BF's/Husbands. Griefers are the same no matter where they are. RL, in a game, etc. Just because I've run across this blog, and seen other like it, it makes me want to go out and active hunt the griefers ;)
I tried BP, it was fun for a few days, but it gets old very fast. Star Trek Online is F2P now, so far I'm only doing PVE but the mix of space and ground combat makes it a welcome change. I might even give Eve a rest for this.
On the other hand, being a long time reader of this blog, I'm going with Ironfist on this one. His arguments were just better than yours. Looking forward to new content though.
Yea... I love how griefers (IE defined as players whos primary enjoyment in the game is derived from causing other players as much loss and unpset as possible) in MMOs always fall back, laughing, on the "It's not real life, it’s a ‘game’ so I can act in any way I please." argument.
I always wonder though... Are you a completely unfeeling jerk like that with your family and friends when you play a game of cards? or Monopoly? Is this how you act with you younger brothers or sisters or your nieces or nephews in games? Is this how you teach your children to play games? Ha, I doubt it.

Games are not real life…. But online MMO’s are played by real people with real feelings and when your only enjoyment is to cause them as much unpleasantness as possible for no other reason than you can… no, you’re an ass and a griefer and there is no argument that make that morally ok.

What's the big difference between shooting some noob who just spawned in an FPS or griefing a noob in an MMO? Also, are people any LESS real behind their consoles/computers in games other than an MMO?
A simple solution to care bears: don't be stupid and griefers can't blow your precious, shiny new space ship up.
That may be true in Eve, but not in BP. His actions there are bordering on harassment. Admitting he did it to get the other guy to stop playing says more than enough. You like to call your victims carebears, sincy you only pick fights you can't lose, I guess that makes you a coward. Shooting a guy once, that's ok, following him over and over to get him to quit is screwed up.

I'm fed up of Black Prophecy now - It's a decent looking game but I can't dedicate the time to leveling up. Skillbooks FTW!
As far as 'picking fights', I used to play Space Cowboy long before it became Ace Online or whatever, and when I was a less experienced player I used to enter the PVP arenas. There were no warnings on the screen as I did so, and I couldn't help noticing that every (and I MEAN, every) time I entered the PVP sectors, I was killed so quicky it took me a few moments to get my bearings back at the castle to work out who'd done it. This was because I just wasn't skilled enough to be able to last against the peeps in there who took delight in popping me over and over before I eventually thought, '....hang on....if I go in there again, I'm going to die...' which was just before I went back to the PVE arenas and continued leveling up and doing consensual PVP when I CHOSE TO. Picking fights? I put myself there deliberately! I was killed by the same guy (who I didn't know) four times in less than 10 minutes, but I certainly wasn't harassed.
Eve is very similar, although I have popped people in HS space though as well as LS - AND I've had it done to me, a lot. You're rarely safe in the Eve universe no matter where you are, but obviously if you decide you want to be a bit more un-safe, you can fly out to Syndicate and see if you can get more than three jumps in from Reblier before someone attacks and kills you. THE CHOICE IS YOURS.................. and if you enter an area where there is even the tiniest of risks you could be killed by someone bigger and better than you (and your corp mates), IT IS STILL YOUR CHOICE.
If you then get repeatedly killed or lose a nice expensive battleship to an AF and decide to leave the game and go try elsewhere because it's unsettling and upsetting for you, that's your choice too.
And as far as this great blogsite goes, what is the deal with people posting to say they don't like it, are leaving it and never coming back? ...........utter hilarity! I bet you'll be back!
Oh no AKeeFa, no one thinks you have the guts to act, in person, to others as you do in the nice safe anonymous environment of the Internet. And I love how you childishly refuse ever answer to the main point, that being an ass to others, because you see it as fun, is not acceptable behavior, in your home at work on in a game. No one here is saying game are “like” real life, no, you need to avoid what they are saying, that it is “real” people in the game that you interact with and that is who you are griefing.

And yes, both my daughter and my son, 8 & 9, sit on my lap, or beside me as I play EVE, and Quake, and Halo… and I am completely vicious with the NPCs (they really aren’t real) and I am decent and honorable with those (the ‘real’ people) I PvP against. In case you don’t know what I mean by “decent and honorable”, may I refer you to the best example I know of in game, The Tuskers.
A professional pirate corp who attack without warning, kill your ship for the cargo and salvage, but they hold back on podkilling, they prefer to ransom, if ransom cannot be met, they are good to their word and pop your pod, they are also just as careful to honor their word if you do pay, every time. They would never allow you to fly with them.
I respect the Tuskers, to the same degree as I hold you and your kind with pity. To accept lying and deceit as a way of life, in any venue in your life, is a sad and pitiable estate. I wonder if you would lie and cheat at poker with your friends? At a Casino in Vegas? Tell them, "It's just a game." see how far that gets you.

This is an intentional tactic, and leaves your opponent NO CHOICE. It is the same as our good friend AKeeFa’s habit of, “…shooting some noob who just spawned in an FPS”… again, intentionally leaving the opponent NO CHOICE. Games are essentially (for me anyway) a chance to unwind after a busy day or week at the office. And the way I play Eve is not the same way you do. I prefer to trick and deceive. You prefer the honourable path in games because, somehow, you feel this reflects on your real life directly. The great thing about this game is that everyone can play the way they want as long as it does not break the rules.
The first time I was ganked while doing a low-sec mission, three BCs dropped in on me and demanded a ransom. I paid and was promptly blown up anyway. I did question their "honour" and "respect" and they replied: "We don't require your respect. We only wanted loot and ISK".
I thought that was funny. You see, I don't take these things too seriously. But you obviously do. Please tell me what is the mature way to react to such occurrences? Keeping in mind this happens in a GAME.
If you bothered to read my post carefully, I was drawing your attention to the fact that anyone who plays a game, regardless of the genre, is in fact just as real as the rest. And in my opinion, there is no difference between spawn killing a noob and griefing in Eve. It is the same thing. And for your information, I get spawn killed often in a FPS. I don't cry about it. I don't stamp my feet and threaten to leave the game. It is just the way it is when you are not familiar with the game. Same as shooting at ninja-baiters like me. They see a thief and get googley-eyed, wanting an easy kill. If they knew better they wouldn't be so stupid and they wouldn't lose their ship and ISK.
Anyone who gets "offended" by the actions of someone in a game is obviously holding on too tight and needs to take a break, and maybe go and get some fresh air.

Lol AkeeFa - used to love the word 'Turd' when I was a kid - only hear it South Park these days! Other point is why do a lot of the posters use terms like 'lunch money' and 'bullying'? How do these children afford the subscription FCS? We recently attacked, at 3 to 4 odds, another corp running sites in an adjoining WH... killed 4 ships, 1 POD and took 2 ships are prize when their pilots ejected rather than face a PODkill...
The difference tween myself, my gameplay style and griefers such as Khalia, AKeeFa & Lou is.... after it was over, and they had docked up in their POS… we gave a “GF” in local, they responded “GF” and we ended up in a convo with them about the recent engagement , their tactics & fits. We treated them decently. As though we were sitting in the same room with them physically…
The difference between ‘us’ (players who believe that honor has a place in a game) is ‘you’ (players who think honor is a silly concept in a game) is that you don’t treat people. in a game, what ‘we’ feel is “decently”, you feel no compunction against trying your hardest to upset those who you can upset. The noobs and carebears… all the players whose playstyle is not the same as yours. If ‘they’ get upset, ‘they’ are at fault… not you. Even though this, an emotional reaction, is exactly what you want mot to create.
You know… if you really feel the way you claim you do, that carebears and roleplayers are idiots for taking a mere game so seriously… then why do you waste your time with them? Why put so much effort and derive so much pleasure from griefing them? The answer is simple… because without them you would have much less fun here. You would be forced to play solely against players as good as and better than you only. You wouldn’t get the high off of, “…follow(ing) the same player all over the game and shoot him over and over.” (italics mine)

I could be ya’lls dad, I’m 51, loving wife, 2 kids 8 & 9 and 3 step kids 28 to 25… I am a Computer Tech with 15 years in my field, I own a 5 acre farm, 12 acres of waterfront on the Ches Bay, a 22’ sailboat and several Jeeps, my family and I go sailing and 4wheelin regularly, I hunt and fish, Oh and I have worked as a licensed P.I., I have held a concealed carry permit since I was 21 and have never had the desire or need to bully or grief anyone for thrills or whatever antisocial high you get from it…
I have a VERY full and fulfilling life… and EVE is my choice to unwind after a busy day also. So whenever anyone has anything to say about me ‘getting a life’… LOL! I quite possibly have a life you would envy (hell, I sometimes even envy me… LOL).

I never said all carebears are idiots. I was one once. I've played in Null. I've played in Low. I've played in WH. But I am not here to point out what I liked about those experiences. In response to Tur, it is totally acceptable to be an asshat in a game. If I'm playing monopoly, I will attempt to manipulate the opponents to to my bidding unknowingly. If I'm playing baseball, I'll kick the back line out of the batters box when I step in for that extra few inches, and if I'm playing Hockey, I'll get in a fight for my team mate and throw a few punches. Some of these things are deplorable outside the context of their respective games, but whatever game I'm playing, I'm going to do everything in my power to win or make the game as miserable as possible for the other team. So long as I don't break any of the games rules, I feel no guilt.
To not take advantage of the rules in every way possible to win isn't conducting yourself respectably, it's just being a retard. If the rules allow me to taunt carebears into shooting me, then I am going to take advantage of those rules to the best of my abilities. to do otherwise would only prove that I'm a moron. Incursions may be crazy OP right now, but do I blame Incursion runners for taking advantage of this? Of course not. That would make me a retard
